Above the Gate

from $60.00

Above the Gate is about a single physical fact — a paint bronc clearing the gate panels entirely, all four hooves suspended in the Colorado afternoon air, the distance between the horse and the ground telling a story that no caption needs to explain. Photographed at the Evergreen Rodeo in the foothills west of Denver, the image captures a moment that stopped the crowd: a horse that didn't just buck but launched, reaching a height that drew open mouths and raised fists from the cowboys watching at the rail above.

The square composition uses the generous foreground sand deliberately. The arena floor below the suspended horse is not empty space — it is the measure of the jump, the visual evidence of what the crowd is reacting to. The eye moves from the sand upward to the horse's hooves, then to the full animal in flight, then to the rider holding position above, and finally to the crowd behind the rail — a young man's fist raised mid-air, another figure leaning forward, the reactions unguarded and genuine. The gate handler on the right is already in motion, reading the horse's trajectory. The flying mane catches the light and carries energy through the upper left of the frame.

Drawing on the kinetic documentary instincts of Ernst Haas and the human-scale authenticity of Wim Wenders, Above the Gate finds its power not in the manufactured drama of a tight crop but in the full spatial context of the arena — sand, gate, horse, rider, crowd — all present, all in relationship, all responding to the same unrepeatable moment. This is the Evergreen Rodeo, a century-old Colorado tradition, on an afternoon when one horse decided to go higher than expected.

Design & Styling

With its warm amber and chestnut tones, dramatic vertical energy, and generous square format, Above the Gate brings both physical presence and authentic western storytelling to any interior. The image works especially well in mountain homes, ranch properties, sporting lodges, western hospitality environments, and executive offices where bold subject matter and authentic American west culture are priorities.

The square format gives the image natural versatility — it works as a centered wall anchor, scales cleanly from 20×20 through 36×36 and beyond, and pairs naturally with the other square and landscape format images in the Evergreen Rodeo collection. The warm chestnut, sand, and amber palette pairs naturally with reclaimed wood, leather, iron, and earth-toned interiors. The large sand foreground gives the image breathing room that rewards placement on larger walls where the full spatial drama of the jump can be appreciated.

Curated Pairings

For the complete Evergreen Rodeo collection: Pair with Out of the ChuteThe Painted StormThe ConversationBlack Thunder, and Her Run for a six-image wall documenting the full breadth of the Evergreen Rodeo — every major event, every tonal register, one century-old Colorado tradition.

For a bronc riding wall: Pair with Out of the ChuteThe Painted Storm, and The Conversation for a grouping dedicated entirely to bronc riding — gate burst, paint horse fury, bareback mid-ride, and maximum hang time. Four images, four moments, one event.

For a two-image height and power statement: Above the Gate paired with Black Thunder — the highest jump in the bronc collection beside the most powerful bull in the rodeo. Two entirely different animals, two entirely different energies, one shared sense of physical force.

For a square format pair: Above the Gate and The Conversation together — two square format bronc images, two different horses, two different moments, the same arena. Natural wall companions at matching sizes.

Fine Art Presentation

Above the Gate is available as a signed fine art photographic print in multiple presentation styles. Chromaluxe Metal gives the image its strongest impact — the chestnut paint coat, the flying mane detail, and the fine texture of the arena sand foreground all render with exceptional clarity and depth on metal. The vertical energy of the suspended horse benefits from the luminosity and sharpness that metal provides at larger sizes. TruLife Acrylic, printed on TrueVue or low-glare acrylic, adds dimensionality and depth well suited to contemporary and transitional interiors. Framed and unframed paper prints are produced on Photo Rag, offering a warmer, more tactile presentation with natural depth in the shadow tones and arena atmosphere, well suited to traditional and rustic interiors. Canvas and Framed Canvas bring texture and warmth that complement the western subject matter in lodge and ranch residential settings.

For the strongest presentation, 30×30 on Chromaluxe Metal is the recommended primary size. At that scale the jump height reads with full physical impact — the distance between the horse's hooves and the arena floor becomes genuinely immersive, and the crowd reaction in the background is fully readable.

Note: Custom and oversized prints are available. Please contact the studio directly to discuss custom framing, sizing, or specialized presentation options.
