A Shadow's Passing is a study of scale, light, and the slow movement of weather across high alpine terrain. Photographed above Crested Butte, Colorado, in the West Elk Mountains at roughly 9,000 feet, the image centers on a weathered granite spire standing against a deep, thin-air blue sky, while a passing cloud drags its shadow across the subalpine meadow below. Drawing from the formal clarity of Ansel Adams and the color sensibility of Eliot Porter, the photograph treats the mountain not as a static monument but as a stage for the shifting conditions that pass over it in a single afternoon.
The composition holds three registers in balance: open sky, exposed rock, and living ground.
