Defiance

from $65.00

Some places carry their name a little lightly, and Defiance, Missouri, is one of them. This is a windmill that has been standing in the wind long enough to look like it means it.

The eye starts at the wheel, a ring of white blades with red-orange tips set against a deep, clear blue sky, then drops down the lattice of the tower and settles into the grass that rises across the lower third of the frame. The low angle puts you in the field with the tower above you, and the dark trees behind it make the white steel stand out. Blue overhead and gold below hold the picture together.

It sits in the lineage of Andrew Wyeth's rural quiet and Edward Hopper's lone structures under hard, clean light. Nothing happens in the frame. A working machine stands in the wind, and that's the whole subject.

Design & Styling: Defiance suits healthcare corridors, waiting rooms and patient rooms, where open sky and a steady, hopeful structure lift a space. In hospitality it works well in boutique hotel hallways, restaurants and lodge settings. At home it belongs in an entry, stairwell or den. Its vertical format fits narrow walls beside doors and along stairs, and the blue-and-gold palette pairs with warm wood, brass and natural linen.

Curated Pairings:

Fine Art Presentation: Printed to order on Chromaluxe metal for the clearest blue and the sharpest white steel, or on TruLife acrylic with a low-glare or anti-glare surface where the room is bright. Framed and unframed paper prints are made on Photo Rag. Each print is made to order and signed.

Note: Custom and oversized photographic prints are available. Please contact the studio directly to discuss custom framing, matting, or specialized museum glass options.
