Eight Opinions (Panorama)

from $65.00

Every group has a few strong opinions. Eight Opinions gathers eight Humboldt penguins on a rock ledge at the Saint Louis Zoo, and no two of them are facing the same way.

The eye lands first on the penguin at center, head tucked down, the darkest shape in the frame and the only one with no face to read. It then moves left to the penguin looking back toward the lens, and across to the group on the right, where two birds stare straight up and a third has turned its back on everyone. The white chests are the lightest tones in the picture, and the dark water along the lower edge holds the whole ledge in place. Each bird is doing something different with its head, and that difference is the picture.

The humor of a group that will not line up owes something to Elliott Erwitt, who found comedy in gesture and in animals that refuse to behave as a set.

Design & Styling

Black, white and soft gray stone, with a thread of pink on the faces, suit family rooms, kitchens, offices, waiting areas, children's spaces and playful dining rooms. The 16:9 format fits a long wall over a sofa, console, banquette or reception desk. It sits comfortably beside white, charcoal, natural wood and cool gray, and it gives a quiet room one light-hearted piece.

Curated Pairings

Three companions, each connected in a different way:

For the same idea: Pair with The Discussion, a grackle and a cowbird angled toward each other in what reads as an argument already under way. Both are unposed theater, built from gesture.

For the same place: Pair with Held Court, a male lion sprawled across a rock ledge at the Saint Louis Zoo, head turned back over his shoulder. Two ledges at the same zoo, one all attitude and one all ease.

For the same format: Pair with Held at Rest (Panorama), an elk herd at rest in Rocky Mountain National Park. Both gather a group of animals into a wide 16:9 frame.

Fine Art Presentation

Available as a signed and numbered limited edition of fifteen (15) prints in ChromaLuxe® Metal, TruLife acrylic, archival paper (framed or unframed) and canvas. ChromaLuxe® Metal is the recommendation: the white chests and the deep blacks gain the most from metal's luminous contrast. Low-glare acrylic adds depth to the dark water. Framed archival paper gives the fine feather detail on the breast bands a quieter, more tactile read.

Note: Custom and oversized photographic prints are available. Please contact the studio directly to discuss custom framing, matting, or specialized museum glass options.
