Mountain Rain was photographed from 14,000 feet on Mount Blue Sky, Colorado, at the moment a passing storm let go of its rain over the valley below. Dark, low clouds roll across the top of the frame while shafts of rain fall in visible columns toward the ridgelines, backlit by a break of gold and orange sunset light along the horizon. Layer after layer of forested peaks recede into blue haze, giving the image a sense of depth that only altitude and distance can produce.

The composition holds two kinds of light at once — the cool blue shadow of the storm overhead and the warm glow escaping beneath it — and lets them meet directly over the rain itself, which catches both colors as it falls. The foreground ridge, still lit and textured with alpine grass and stone, grounds the scene and gives the eye a place to stand before it travels out across the receding mountains toward the light.
