Steel Wave explores the unexpected beauty found within an industrial landscape after a summer rain. Photographed in New Haven, Missouri, the image centers on a rusted steel form whose folded shape rises above a pool of still water, creating a reflection that transforms the scene from documentation into abstraction. The weathered metal appears almost sculptural, its sweeping form suggesting movement, flight, and tension against the quiet surface below.
Drawing inspiration from Aaron Siskind's exploration of abstraction, Ernst Haas' appreciation for color and atmosphere, and Minor White's search for meaning within ordinary subjects, the photograph invites viewers to look beyond the identity of the object itself. Rust, water, reflection, and geometry become the true subjects, revealing relationships that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The composition balances sharp angles against circular forms, with the industrial silos providing structure and rhythm behind the folded steel.
