Dressed for Winter

from $65.00

Every dog has an opinion about winter, and this one is sure of hers. Dressed for Winter catches a border collie mix puppy square to the camera on a snowy boardwalk in Evergreen, Colorado, in a gray knit sweater a size too serious for her, and with pale blue eyes that look straight back at you. Sapphire, a border collie and Australian shepherd mix, was about nine weeks old when this was made in 2024.

The eye lands on the face first, white fur and black ears against dark pines, then drops down the sweater to the paws planted in the snow. From there the snow-capped railing curves away behind her toward the log building, giving the frame a path back into the landscape. The light is bright and soft, so the whites hold detail, and the black ears and the dark trees keep the picture from washing out.

It is a quiet, funny portrait in the spirit of Elliott Erwitt's dog photographs: a plain, level look at an animal that seems to have something to say. The sweater and the stare do the rest.

Design & Styling

The soft, high-key palette suits calm rooms: pediatric and senior-living spaces, veterinary and wellness offices, and lodge and café walls where a gentle, friendly focal point is wanted. In a home it works beside a front door, in a mudroom, or above a sofa or reading chair, with warm wood, wool and neutral tones around it. It is a natural gift for anyone getting a puppy this winter, and for dog people in general.

Curated Pairings

For the same animal portrait: Pair with Committed, a border collie mid-stride onto a wet boulder near Evergreen Lake with eyes locked on the camera, the same direct look in motion.

For the same season: Pair with Winter's Watch, a red-winged blackbird holding still against a pale winter sky, another quiet winter animal portrait.

For shared humor: Pair with Falling on Deaf Ears, a bugling bull elk beside a cow who keeps grazing, the same comic note in a wild setting.

For the same place and snow: Pair with Where Winter Waited, a snow-covered lakeside scene at Evergreen Lake, the same quiet winter place.

Fine Art Presentation

Available as an open edition print in framed or unframed archival paper, ChromaLuxe® Metal (Gloss, Semi-Gloss or Matte), TruLife Acrylic, canvas, and wood. Framed archival paper on Photo Rag is the recommended presentation: it gives the soft whites and the fine fur detail a warm, gallery-quiet finish that suits a portrait. ChromaLuxe® Metal (Matte) is the alternative for a crisper, more contemporary hang.

Note: This is an open edition print, unsigned and unnumbered, available in the sizes and materials listed above.
