Rock with Wings is a monumental black & white study of Shiprock, the volcanic spire that rises nearly 1,600 feet above the high desert plain of northwestern New Mexico. Photographed from a low vantage point across open grassland, the image lets the formation's jagged, columnar peaks command the frame against a heavy, textured sky — a composition built in the spirit of Ansel Adams's zone-system landscapes, where tonal control does as much storytelling as the subject itself.
The title honors the formation's Navajo name, Tsé Bit'a'í, meaning "rock with wings." In Navajo tradition, the formation is said to be the remains of a great bird that carried the Navajo people from a distant, dangerous land to their present homeland, turning to stone upon landing. Shiprock remains a sacred site to the Navajo Nation, and this photograph was made respectfully, from public land, without approaching or climbing the formation.
