Some subjects seem to hover between animal and sculpture. Drifting Silence is a quiet study in form, suspended in near-total darkness: a spotted jellyfish, photographed at Ripley's Aquarium of Canada in Toronto, drifting alone with its frilled, coral-like arms catching just enough light to emerge from the black.
The bell sits low in the frame, its rows of pale spots glowing like a string of pearls against the dark. From it the arms rise like a branching coral, crowned with clusters of tiny frills, while long, paddle-shaped appendages reach upward, one lifting well above the rest. The eye starts on the brightest spots along the bell, climbs the frilled arms, and follows the tallest appendage up into the black, where the space around the animal gives it room to breathe.
Rendered in warm, sepia-toned monochrome rather than the vivid color typically associated with its subject, the jellyfish stops reading as a literal sea creature and becomes something closer to sculpture, isolated the way a single object might be lit in a gallery case: a study in light, texture, and stillness.
