Three Plums, After Dark

from $65.00

Fruit ripens in daylight, but some of it looks best after dark. Three Plums, After Dark is a studio still life built in the dark: three plums in a row beside a tipped wine glass, each one doubled on a black glass surface below it, and a red glow coming up from inside the fruit.

The eye lands on the left plum first, where the red burns brightest and the glass behind it catches a small point of warm light. It then steps along the row to the right, each plum a little larger and a little cooler than the last, and drops to the reflections underneath, where flecks of light scatter across the glass like sparks. The tipped wine glass anchors the left side and leans the whole row into the frame. The black is true, and it carries most of the picture.

The color against black is Ernst Haas territory, a few saturated shapes held in a dark field. The single warm light holding a dark room owes something to Edward Hopper, who made a lit object feel like the only thing awake.

Design & Styling

Deep red, black and a trace of copper suit wine rooms, restaurants, bars, dining rooms and lounges. The 3:2 format fits a wall over a sideboard, wine cabinet, bar back or console. The black ground works beside charcoal, walnut, aged brass and cream, and the red gives a dark room one warm center.

Curated Pairings

Three companions, each connected in a different way:

For the same fruit: Pair with Carried by the Wind, three pieces of fruit on a dark reflective surface under warm, theatrical light. Both come from the same studio setup, one with pollen and a stone face, the other with a tipped glass and a long row of reflections.

For the closer look: Pair with Velvet and Glass, a single plum pressed against the wine glass, with the bloom of its skin and the warm light inside the glass in full view. Hung together, they are the wide view and the close one.

For the same table: Pair with Before the Crush, Chianti grapes the day before the harvest. Fruit and wine in the same room, one picked in daylight and the other staged after dark.

Fine Art Presentation

Available as a signed and numbered limited edition of fifteen (15) prints in ChromaLuxe® Metal, TruLife acrylic, archival paper (framed or unframed) and canvas. ChromaLuxe® Metal is the recommendation: the red glow and the true black gain the most from metal's luminous color and contrast. Low-glare acrylic adds depth to the reflections. Framed archival paper gives the plum's velvet skin a quieter, more tactile read.

Note: Custom and oversized photographic prints are available. Please contact the studio directly to discuss custom framing, matting, or specialized museum glass options.
