Shelter is often just a place to stand. Under the Crossing finds a single hooded figure standing beneath the massive stone arch of Prague's Charles Bridge on a rainy afternoon, back to the camera, looking out toward the Vltava River.
The arch does the framing. Its warm, weathered sandstone curves across the top and right of the frame, and the deep shadow of the vaulted underside on the left leads the eye down to the figure, small, dark, and low in the opening. Beyond, the river runs pale and rippled past a riverside tree in green and rust, with the rooftops of the city faint in the distance, and a pair of pigeons on the wet cobblestones adds a last quiet detail. The contrast of scale is the point: a lone person pausing within a structure built to outlast centuries of weather.
Drawing inspiration from the cinematic observation of Wim Wenders and the quiet emotional spaces found in Edward Hopper's work, the photograph considers the spaces beneath and between destinations, the places where people pause, reflect, and briefly step outside the current of daily life.

The warm ochre stone, wet cobblestones, and solitary figure of Under the Crossing suit studies, libraries, executive offices, boutique hotel rooms, and homes that welcome travel and quiet contemplation. The warm palette works against cream, deep green, or charcoal walls.
