Out of the Chute
Out of the Chute is a study in suspended force — the precise instant a bronc and rider explode from the arena gate into open air, the outcome still unresolved. Photographed at the Evergreen Rodeo in the Colorado foothills, the image captures a moment that exists in fractions of a second: the horse fully airborne, hindquarters driving upward, the rider holding position against pure animal power, the gate handler braced against the rope. Every element in the frame is in motion, yet the exposure holds it all in sharp stillness.
The panoramic composition works because of what surrounds the action. The crowd at the rail — cowboys in white hats leaning forward, phones raised, watching — gives the moment human scale and context. The teal arena panels frame the gate burst without competing with it. The foreground sand, warm and textured in the Colorado afternoon light, grounds the image in place and time. The eye moves naturally from the gate explosion outward through the watching crowd, then back to the horse and rider — a circuit that keeps returning to the moment of release.
Drawing on the kinetic color sensibilities of Ernst Haas and the documentary presence of Wim Wenders, Out of the Chutetreats a western tradition not as spectacle but as lived experience. This is not a studio approximation of the west. It is the working west, documented at full intensity — the Evergreen Rodeo, a summer tradition running for over a century in the Colorado foothills, held in the light of a single unrepeatable afternoon.
Design & Styling
With its warm gold and amber tones, dynamic panoramic composition, and unmistakably western subject matter, Out of the Chute brings energy, authenticity, and a strong sense of place to any interior. The image works especially well in mountain homes, ranch properties, rustic-modern interiors, sporting lodges, western-themed hospitality spaces, executive offices, and any environment that values authentic American culture and the working west.
The panoramic format makes the image particularly effective above sofas, credenzas, conference tables, and larger wall spaces where viewers can take in the full width of the arena scene. The warm earth tones — leather, sand, denim, and late-morning light — pair naturally with reclaimed wood, iron, bronze, linen, hide, and deep earth-toned interiors.
Curated Pairings
For a two-image contrast wall: Pair with The Painted Storm — grey bronc and chestnut paint, two horses, two moments, one arena. Together they anchor a wall in the full drama of the Evergreen Rodeo.
For a three-image Evergreen Rodeo wall: Add Black Thunder for a grouping that moves through bronc riding, paint horse fury, and bull riding — three events, three tonal registers, one century-old Colorado tradition.
For the complete Evergreen Rodeo collection: Add The Conversation, Her Run, and The Painted Storm for a five-image wall documenting every major event at the Evergreen Rodeo — bronc, bareback, bull, and barrel — across panoramic, landscape, and square formats.
Fine Art Presentation
Out of the Chute is available as a signed fine art photographic print in multiple presentation styles. Chromaluxe Metal gives the image its strongest impact — the sharpness of the suspended moment, the contrast between warm leather tones and the cool arena panels, and the texture of the arena sand all benefit from the luminosity and durability of metal. TruLife Acrylic, printed on TrueVue or low-glare acrylic, provides exceptional depth and dimensionality well suited to contemporary interiors. Framed and unframed paper prints are produced on Photo Rag, offering a softer, more tactile presentation with greater subtlety in the crowd and atmosphere. Canvas Framed gives the image warmth and texture well suited to rustic and lodge-style spaces.
For the strongest presentation, larger panoramic formats are recommended. The relationship between horse, rider, crowd, and arena becomes more immersive as the print size increases, allowing the full physical drama of the moment to register at a scale that matches its intensity.
Note: Custom and oversized prints are available. Please contact the studio directly to discuss custom framing, sizing, or specialized presentation options.
