The Conversation

from $65.00

The oldest negotiation in rodeo has no guaranteed answer. The Conversation catches a rider mid-ride at the Evergreen Rodeo in the Colorado foothills, body torqued forward over a dark bay horse in full buck, the rigging hand locked and the free arm reaching for balance that may or may not come: a conversation conducted at full speed, in front of everyone.

The square composition compresses the action into a tight, almost claustrophobic frame. The horse fills the lower two-thirds, dark coat against warm sand, hindquarters driving into the dirt, while the rider's black vest and lavender shirt stand out against the teal arena panels. Behind them the crowd watches with the stillness of people who understand what they are seeing: a television cameraman steady on his shot, a cowboy with a hand raised mid-gesture, a young man on the left simply watching.

Drawing on the compressed intensity of Ernst Haas's rodeo work and the human-scale documentary presence of Wim Wenders, the image finds its power in one rider and one horse working something out in real time: the Evergreen Rodeo, a century-old Colorado tradition, distilled to its essential human moment.

Design & Styling

The square format gives The Conversation exceptional versatility: a single centered anchor on a feature wall, part of a grid with other square prints, or a centerpiece flanked by the panoramic rodeo images. It suits mountain homes, ranch properties, sporting lodges, western hospitality spaces, and executive offices, and its warm sand, chestnut, and teal palette pairs with leather, reclaimed wood, iron, and aged bronze. The image holds from 20×20 to 30×30 and scales to immersive statement sizes.

Curated Pairings

To build a rodeo wall around The Conversation, consider these companion pieces from the same arena:

For the gate burst: Pair with Out of the Chute, the panoramic bronc explosion; hung with this square above or below it, the format contrast keeps the eye moving across the wall.

For a two-image rodeo pairing: Complement with The Painted Storm, two horses, two riders, two visual energies at matching sizes.

For another split second of the arena: Pair with Flying Colors, a paint horse clearing the chute rail with straw and mane torn loose and the bareback rider's free arm thrown wide.

Fine Art Presentation

Available as a signed fine art print on ChromaLuxe® Metal (gloss, semi-gloss, or matte), Glossy Anti-Glare Acrylic (TruLife), canvas, wood, and archival paper (framed or unframed). ChromaLuxe® Metal brings out the full tonal range: the dark bay coat against warm sand, the lavender shirt, and the flying dirt and rigging, and at 24×24 or 30×30 the square format has an almost portrait-like presence. Framed archival paper gives a warmer, more tactile read for traditional and rustic rooms, and canvas adds natural texture for lodge and ranch settings.

Note: Custom and oversized photographic prints are available. Please contact the studio directly to discuss custom framing, matting, or specialized museum glass options.
